TESSA Frayling, of Leighton Park, the true "Westbury Leigh estate", is incorrect in suggesting that the expanding Leigh Park community is damaging the amenities and facilities of Westbury Leigh (Letters, October 15).

All the main industries in Westbury Leigh, such as the tannery and Becks Mill, closed some years ago thus leading to the more recent closure of several more businesses such as the Phipps Arms pub.

For decades, Westbury Leigh residents campaigned desperately for relief from heavy traffic which ran along the narrow road called Westbury Leigh. When the B3098/9 was diverted through Leigh Park last year, this sealed the fate of Westbury Leigh's remaining shops including the sub-Post Office.

The 1998 planning consent for Leigh Park included a community hall to be built by Persimmon. Westbury Leigh residents then proceeded to create Westbury Leigh Community Hall, which opened in 2001. The outstanding success of Westbury Leigh Community Hall (it's almost always fully booked) is in large part due to regular use by Leigh Park residents. We love it! Not only that, but we've agreed in principle to run a joint booking system for both halls when we get ours.

Both committees agree that both halls are needed and they'll complement each other very well. Ask the chairman of Westbury Leigh Community Hall, Glynn Bridges (until recently the Mayor of Trowbridge).

As for Westbury Leigh Primary School now being located in a new building within Leigh Park, the governors have now written to me to say, in effect, that the school is in Westbury but not Leigh Park. This is laughable and a sad reflection of the clumsy hostility which still exists in the minds of some towards the establishment of a new community neighbourhood next to Westbury Leigh.
