RE THE letter from Graham Myatt in last week's Wiltshire Times: the Bradford on Avon Preservation Trust hastens to assure your correspondent that it did object to the plans submitted for the development of the old gas works site on Frome Road, but to no avail.
The Trust is not in a position "to allow" applications from developers as he assumes. It can only make its comments to the town council and West Wiltshire District Council, whose councillors make the planning decisions for Bradford on Avon.
At present, the Trust's representatives are actively involved, with other groups in the town, in consultations with Taylor Woodrow, the developer of the Kingston Mills site.
The Trust's aims are for a balanced, mixed-use site, which will provide employment opportunities as well as homes and community facilities, reduce the need to travel and conserve and enhance our unique town.
In the meantime planning applications have been submitted for the Saxon Garage and Colour Developments/Keates Garage.
These applications are largely for housing schemes which will replace valuable employment sites.
The Trust argues that a greater emphasis on both of these sites needs to be given to sustainable development and the promotion of balanced town communities.
The limited number of employment sites in the town should not be further reduced.
