BROTHERS Toby and Dan Hall won't be letting nepotism get in the way of them and a coveted chess title.

The pair both pupils at Commonweal School - will join 80 other young hopefuls from across the country to take part in the Ampleforth Junior Masters on October 31.

And Toby and Dan, of Old Town, who have represented England in the game, reckon they're in with a chance of scooping the £2,000 price money.

The competition will be held at Ampleforth College in North Yorkshire.

Dan, 14, said: "This tournament is very well regarded but the trip won't just be about chess.

"We'll be able to meet new friends and hopefully play a bit of sport too."

Toby, 12, reckons his big brother has the edge over him, but he's determined to give him everything he's got if the pair meet in the competition.

"Dan is probably better than me because he's two years older," said Toby, who started first represented the country when he was just seven.

"It would be brilliant if I could win but the main thing is having a go and taking part."

The event brings together the top-ranked under 16 players and is the only competition that gives the winner automatic qualification into the 2005 British Chess Championship.

Young players Robbie Dams, 15, of Westlea, and Nicola Thomas, 15, of Wroughton, will also be joining the brothers.
