Bath head coach John Connolly had no regrets at his decision to throw young prop Matt Stevens in for a start as he grabbed a try in a 22-12 Heineken Cup win over Bourgoin at the Recreation Ground.

Connolly said: "I thought he was good at some things and poor at others. Milloud is a serious operator, as good a loosehead as you will find anywhere."

With a try count of three to nil, Bath will be happy with their performance.

Stevens got their first as he built on good work by Chris Malone to drive over the line.

Blindside flanker Beattie added a second try from a clever looped pass by Olly Barkley and Danny Grewcock surged through the French line to set up a ruck and quick hands saw Brendon Daniel squeeze in at the corner to secure an opening win in Pool Two.

Gloucester's hopes of continuing their excellent domestic form on the European stage came unstuck in dramatic fashion at Stade Jean Bouin.

The Cherry and Whites led 11-10 at half-time and looked more than capable of victory in the shadow of the Parc des Princes.

But the home side surged ahead in the second half and Gloucester had no answer when the going got really tough, going down 39-31.
