SCOTT Wilson, which has an office in Swindon, is carrying out research into accidents at level crossings.
The problem is cars zigzagging through gates even when a red light is showing. Between 1994 and 2003 two people died in accidents of this kind and there are fears it could cause a serious rail accident.
The research includes the possibility of putting median strips in the approaches to crossings.
CCTV cameras will be set up at level crossings to assess how widespread the practice is and on sites with problems the strips may be introduced.
The work is being carried out on behalf of the Rail Safety and Standards Board.
