Ref. 73088-25SHOPPERS in Swindon were bemused to see snorkellers in the town centre.

The bizarrre sight of two snorkellers in wetsuits and extreme wet weather gear at the crossroads in Regent Street was aimed at raising awareness of how climate change is increasing the risk of flooding.

They were also gave away free low-energy lightbulbs, and offering advice on saving energy.

The Swindon Under Water event was organised by Wiltshire Wildlife Trust and Swindon Council, as part of Switch On, an initiative encouraging people to take action in their own homes to help slow down climate change.

Last month heavy rains in Swindon caused chaos as buildings were flooded, several roads and businesses were closed and homes in west Swindon were deluged with raw sewage from overflowing drains.

Ruth Baker, spokeswoman for Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, said: "Although we can't say that this one flooding incident occurred because of climate change we do know that these kinds of extreme weather events are beginning to take place more often."

Hannah Moser, Switch On project officer at the trust, said: "We are trying to highlight the links between climate change, wildlife and energy efficiency.

"The project is telling people that wildlife is being adversely affected by climate change.

"For example, water voles' habitat is being washed out by rain, and rivers are disappearing through drought."
