CLEAR YOUR CAR CAMPAIGN: THE RAC is backing our campaign by donating free car security bags for 500 readers.
Earlier this year, RAC Auto Windscreen the division which repairs broken windows ran its own Nothing on Display initiative, which saw the launch of the Safe Sack (pictured right).
The idea is that before leaving their vehicle, motorists place valuables in the drawstring bag and take it with them.
The Safe Sack also contains advice on combating car crime.
Included is a card to be displayed on the dashboard to remind motorists to remove belongings.
It also sends a clear message to potential thieves that the car contains no valuables.
The sacks will be given out at this week's Adver roadshow to promote our new look paper.
Drivers can pick one up while stocks last by buying a copy of the paper at the roadshow, which runs between 11am and 2pm at the following venues:
Today The Link Centre, West Swindon
Tomorrow Lime Kiln Leisure Centre, Wootton Bassett
Wednesday Asda Wal-Mart, Orbital Retail Park
Thursday town centre
Friday Greenbridge Retail Park
Normal Newsquest rules apply.
Avoid crime
Try to park in a busy, well-lit place, preferably beneath a light.
Never leave valuables in view most insurance companies will not cover replacement costs for the loss of personal effects.
Where possible, close the cover on your stereo or take it with you when leaving the vehicle.
Never leave handbags, laptop cases or briefcases in sight even if empty.
It sounds obvious, but police are stunned by the number of motorists who ignore the most basic precaution always lock doors and shut windows.
When loading valuables into the boot of a car that will be left unattended, look around is anyone watching?
Fit a car alarm.
Never leave coats in your car thieves will break in to see if there is a wallet in the pocket.
