Wootton Bassett's 1st Reserves travelled to the south of Bath on wet and windy Saturday to defeat Old Culverhaysians 37-12 in their Bath Combination Merit Table fixture.

In a match that was to be dictated by the conditions Bassett ran the game in their strong pack, Woody Briggs scoring first from a maul following a lineout and Rob May touching down a pushover, converted by Pete Thornton, for a 12-0 lead at the break.

The second half saw the wind blowing in Bassett's favour, with a second to Briggs and further tries to Wayne Cook, Carl Britten and Matt McKee.

Thornton rounded off Bassett's scoring with a second conversion and a penalty kick.

Old Culverhaysians were rewarded for a spirited performance with two second-half tries, the second converted, but the result was never in doubt.

Bassett skipper May said: "It was a game that was dictated by conditions, but one our forward pack was well suited for, both scrum-half Mark Trowbridge and hooker John Saunders were outstanding today.

"We were a bit rusty, though, after two weeks off, so the lads will need to lift themselves for the tough clash next week against Chippenham."
