A FORMER Swindon rugby player returned to the town as a successful author.
Ian Manners, 49, was signing copies of his critically acclaimed novel at WH Smith in the town centre.
He believes that a review in the Evening Advertiser of his book, Where Do I Belong? kick-started his career as a writer two years ago.
Ian said: "Getting the book reviewed by the Advertiser was a real buzz and gave me my first big break. As an unknown first-time author, to get such a good review was a dream come true.
"The signing went very well, and I sold quite a few copies.
"Generally the book has been selling well but it's very difficult for a first-time author. I had to set up a publishing company myself.
"For my next book, which I have almost finished, I will be able to go to an agent or publisher and they will be more likely to take me seriously after the success of this book."
The novel, which is set in Kenya and Germany, went on to be reviewed in a number of British and Kenyan newspapers and magazines.
Ian's book, on the surface a love story turned action thriller, examines issues such as global inequality, international crime and racial hatred.
He drew heavily on his experience of racism while married to a Kenyan woman.
Ian lived in Old Town in the 1970s while working for Castrol Oil in Swindon and went on to manage the Trout Inn at Lechlade.
He played rugby regularly in the Swindon 1st XV for ten years.
Where Do I Belong? published by Two Hunters, costs £6.99 and is available at bookshops.
