SWINDON'S Liberal Democrat group has voiced its support for the redevelopment of the County Ground.
Tory councillor Justin Tomlinson put forward a motion on Friday asking the council to consider revamping the Robins' current home.
And Coun Michael Dickinson (Lib Dem, Central) yesterday echoed this view. He said: "I am happy to support this motion as long as the green spaces near Shrivenham Road, the cricket ground and the athletics track are not removed or worse, developed for housing."
But Labour councillor Mavis Childs has spoken against the motion and has called on Swindon Council to find alternative sites.
She said: "We have got to get real it is not the right place for it. It is called moving with the times."
The motions will be presented at the council meeting on November 18.
The club suffered a major setback with its previous stadium bid after drawing up plans for a stadium at Shaw which the council then vetoed before a planning application had been submitted.
Tony Norris, the chairman of Swindon Town Supporters' Trust, said: "A revamped County Ground could be the jewel in the crown of the town centre regeneration."
