SWINDON Council's top finance councillor has said he would not back a casino. Nick Martin (Con, Shaw and Nine Elms) said: "They methodically take money off anyone who visits.
"I was a trainee accountant doing the books for working men's clubs, and once I saw how much money the slot machines made for the house, I never played on them again.
"And the same is true with casinos they are all tilted to getting a proportion for the house or the banker."
Although there has not been any interest registered in casinos moving to Swindon, Coun Martin said he would expect companies to look at opening one, particularly as Swindon is set to carry on expanding.
He said were it ever to come to a situation where he voted on the issue as a councillor, he would be against it.
He said: "As someone working hard to be responsible for the borough's finances I would vote no. . I don't have a religious view, but there are a lot of people in this town who are struggling for money as it is, without a gaming house."
