Wortheys Sports Association has achieved official charity status in its quest to provide better sporting facilities in Malmesbury.
The move, which means the organisation can benefit from tax breaks and concessions, follows several months of lobbying the Inland Revenue.
Members also hope it will open the way to grant-giving trusts and foundations.
Malmesbury deputy town mayor Jackie Martin, who is heavily involved with the association, said: "To have achieved charity status is a very good thing.
"Wortheys needs to function as a charity because we are working to improve the health and well-being of everyone who lives in Malmesbury."
Mrs Martin said that a toddler play zone is due to be opened on November 6 as a new community facility.
Wortheys was formed a year ago and currently offers rugby, netball, cricketing and skateboard clubs.
Fundraising events so far have included a Daisy Dollop and bonanza competition.
