14404/1GROUPS taking part in Devizes Lions Club's recent sponsored walk have raised an estimated £10,000 for charity.
Representatives of 35 groups set off from Devizes Wharf on October 17 on the ten-mile trek along Quakers Walk, up Roundway Hill, around Roundway Down and back.
Mayor Margaret Taylor and her husband Ray, raised money for the Mayoral Appeal in aid of the Nursteed Centre and Devizes and District Link, both local charities which cater for disabled people.
Immediately after the walk, the total amount of sponsorship pledged came to £9,750 but the Lions expect much more to come in.
Yesterday Lions president Gordon Straker and his wife, Helen, presented cheques totalling £17,000 to Bath Cancer Research RUH and Dorothy House Hospice Care.
