I am writing to express my concerns about the safety of the B3098, a busy stretch of road running from Westbury to West Lavington.

In September, during my seventh month of pregnancy, I was forced from the road near Erlestoke by a lorry, resulting in £800 worth of damage to my car, but fortunately no injury to myself.

Heavily shaken, I wrote to the council expressing my fears for myself and other road users of the B3098 who have to steel themselves every time they turn a corner for fear of meeting a large vehicle using the route as a short cut. Furthermore, I wrote to express my disgust at the road's disrepair, whereby eroded edges, pot-holes, unstable banks and narrow bends make it a treacherous stretch of road in even the fairest weather conditions.

The response I received stated that 'the resources available for accident reduction are used for remedial measures at the sites with the worst accident problems.' Therefore, several people need to be seriously injured or, worse still, die before the council will consider putting measures in place to improve the safety of this road. With regard to resurfacing works, I was told that these are 'likely to be carried out next year', something local residents have been hearing for several years.

I am in a state of disbelief as to the attitude the council is presenting. Surely prevention is better than cure? I urge users of the B3098 to write to the council to demand they take action before someone dies. I was fortunate this time to experience no personal injury, but will I be so lucky a second time?
