GAZETTE & HERALD: A REPRESENTATIVE of Sutton Benger's Cricket Club said he will not stand for the Village Hall committee again after a row over a £100 deposit.

The row started because the Village Hall committee refused to give Sutton Benger Cricket Club chairman Trevor Knowlden back his deposit for the Sutton Benger Extravaganza, a fund-raiser for the club and for charity.

Mr Knowlden said: "There are 13 or 14 people on the committee and it went three to one in favour of keeping the £100 deposit because we went over 11.30pm."

But Mr Knowlden says he had a Public Entertainment Order that said the event could go on to midnight.

He said: "I am now moving the Christmas Extravaganza to the Wellesley Arms because of pettiness.

"All the villagers put hours and hours in working to raise money for the Village Hall and now we cannot use it.

"I have personally provided staging and lighting and all free of charge for plays and pantomimes and all that has come to an end.

"I feel totally gutted and let down by the Village Hall committee which is not the true reflection of the village people."

Sutton Benger Cricket Club secretary, Andrew Whitehead, who is a representative on the Village Hall committee, said: "I am not going to stand again because of the withholding of the money and the treatment of the cricket club.

"Obviously it's a fund-raising event for the cricket club and withholding £100 impacts on people's pockets."

When questioned on the issue, Andrew Scott-Green, Village Hall committee chairman, said: "I have no comment."
