I am writing to support the letter regarding traffic calming in Long Street, Devizes and am wondering why there is a possibility that the 20mph scheme might be abandoned.
Lorries thunder through at an alarming rate, certainly making the top floors of my house shake when surely it would be safer and more environmentally friendly for large vehicles to use the by-pass, keeping this beautiful and listed street as a quieter approach (especially for our numerous town visitors) to our ancient market place.
I endorse the fact that it is almost impossible to cross the road safely during peak times, and is particularly congested around the narrowing area adjacent to the town hall.
Walking recently in New Park Street, I noticed what a difference the second crossing has made.
No problems for pedestrians here, in spite of this being a more congested route for traffic.
Residents in Long Street were sent questionnaires to voice opinions on this matter, but the working party have certainly not kept us informed of their decisions.
I would like to know why there is a possibility of speed restrictions being implemented in Hillworth and Station Roads, and why it is absolutely essential to have an unanimous decision regarding Long Street.
Pollution, safety, noise and structural damage should not be allowed to continue when a simple speed restriction and re-direction of heavy vehicles would preserve this area for future generations.
