RESIDENTS in Westbury can expect a little more peace and quiet at weekends after a landowner agreed scramblers should not be riding on its land.
Young riders had been using the land off Storridge Road as a practice ground and claimed to have the landowner's permission to do so.
Nearby residents became increasingly frustrated at the noise, which was a particular problem on Sundays, and asked Heywood parish councillor Joyce Smith for help.
Cllr Smith managed to track down the London-based landowner and got written confirmation that there was no permission to ride on the site.
She said: "All we are waiting for now is for the landowner to put up notices indicating it is private land.
"These kids had found something to do, but unfortunately it was in the wrong place. The police couldn't act because it was private land and the kids said they had permission of the landowner.
"I've got nothing against scramble bikes. When I was young I used to ride a motorbike myself and I really feel there should be a site for them to do that."
