Journalist Kate Adie was the guest of honour at an autumn meeting of the Wiltshire Federation of Women's Institutes.
Miss Adie, who was twice named as Reporter of the Year by the Royal Television Society, gave a talk at the WI's meeting in Salisbury City Hall on Monday.
All the seats were sold well in advance of the meeting, with Miss Adie talking about her latest book Corsets to Camouflage.
The former chief news correspondent for the BBC was given a national award for her coverage of the SAS storming of the Iranian embassy siege in 1980.
At the meeting, Bradford on Avon WI were awarded the top prize for the most members recruited between 2003 and 2004, in the branches of 30 members or over category.
The county's craft cup was jointly awarded to Shirley Curr at Pewsham WI and Eunice Stride at Dilton Marsh WI.
