THANK you Councillor Hedley for pointing out that Newtown is a conservation area, whoever would have guessed?
When I came here not so many years ago the streets were weed free and not littered permanently with dustbins, the beautiful Bath stone was not covered with peeling or soon to peel cream emulsion and satellite dishes had to be placed out of sight of the road.
The trees were not ripped by passing lorries which are forbidden to travel down Avenue Road and the residents were not allowed to have trees and hedges overhanging the pavements.
Newtown is a small Victorian time capsule and should be complementing the weaving heritage of the museum. Sadly the back lanes seem to have disappeared in some places but the well built houses remain a testament to the style of the day.
Let's hope that the council will take another look and give us some hope of decent maintenance and enforce such rulings as they have.
A TURNBULL
