AN EXTRA 200 affordable homes will be provided each year under Swindon Council's new housing blueprint.
Measures to tackle homelessness and stop people sleeping rough in the town are also included which was launched yesterday.
The housing plan lasts for the next five years and has already been praised by the Government.
Councillor David Renard, the lead member for housing, is delighted with the new master plan.
"The strategy sets out exciting and deliverable housing plans that the people of Swindon want to see.
"In addition, the Government's housing watchdog has deservedly awarded the strategy full marks and has held it up to others as an excellent example of how you can make a real difference."
As well as producing more affordable homes and tackling homelessness, the strategy aims to bring privately-owned derelict homes back into use.
Other priorities include helping elderly and vulnerable people to live independently by giving them more options of places to live.
Council tenants will also be given a greater say in how their homes are managed, according to the strategy.
A total of 67 organisations with an interest in housing, including builders, health services, the Chamber of Commerce and tenants' groups, were consulted as the strategy was put together.
