Wootton Bassett kept their sights on the Southern Counties South top spot with an excellent 15-11 win at fellow title hopefuls Dorchester.

From the kick-off Dorchester came out firing and slotted a penalty on 13 minutes.

But that merely jump-started Bassett and they began to trouble the Dorchester defence with some excellent forward power and exciting back moves.

The Dorchester tackling creaked and Sean Millwaters kicked a penalty.

Dorchester were awarded another penalty which they kicked to squeeze ahead again.

And that was closely followed by a converted try from the home side after a neat backs move.

With Bassett trailing 11- 3 their pack stepped up the pace. Young prop Gary Williamson drove low and touched down under the posts giving Millwaters the easy conversion.

With only seven minutes of the first period left and Bassett trailing by one point, forwards Flo Vialan and Gary Darragh released flying winger Ben Bailey to cross, Millwaters missing the conversion.

The second half saw rugged defence from both sides, but neither managed to convert any of their pressure into more points.

Back row Darragh said: "This was a brilliant win. It was a hard-fought game played at such a pace and if I was five years younger I would have enjoyed it!"

n Minety finally broke their Southern Counties South duck with an emphatic three-try win over mid-table Tadley.

After dominating the opening half-hour, Minety finally got on the board with a penalty, before a storming 40 yard run by scrum-half Will Howse allowed flanker Mark Holdsworth to crash over for the converted try. Tadley kicked a penalty and added a try after half-time.

But Minety responded magnificently, returning to the attack and Dave Church crossed the line and running round under the posts for a crucial try.

As Tadley pushed on, they were caught as Tim Vaughan hacked it upfield and touched down to seal the triumph.

Coach Andy Ward said: "I'm proud of them. There were no superstars out there. What we had instead was a gutsy performance from all 18 players who took part.''

n DOMINANT Calne continued their quiet progress in Dorset & Wilts One North with a comfortable 31-7 triumph at Pewsey Vale.

The visitors controlled the game and had Pewsey pinned in their own half throughout.

Calne opened the scoring with a penalty from hooker Mike Palfrey.

Then full-back Neil Young collected a poor clearance kick and released blindside flanker Daron Thomas who ran 30 metres for the opening try. Palfrey added the conversion.

Playing down the slope in the second period, Calne were able to unleash centres Guthrie Holiday and Graeme Neale.

Making his return to action after a long injury lay-off, inside centre Neale proved he could still be a handful. However, it was Holiday who was next on the scoresheet.

Young again collected a clearance kick and set up Holiday, who shrugged off a number of defenders for the score.

Palfery added the extras and converted a score from scrum-half Mike Charlwood.

Pewsey finally got on the board as second row Dave Williamson exploited poor tackling with a quick tap penalty and crashed over for a converted score.

CRICKLADE'S lost a potential two points as they failed to raise a side for their Dorset & Wilts One North trip to Westbury.
