Swindon went top of the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Premier Division with a narrow 20-13 win at Harwell.

A 19-12 defeat for fellow title contenders Drifters at Chipping Norton took the Greenbridge Road side to the summit but they were made to work by a home side who belied their lowly league status.

The hosts put up a spirited display, keeping Swindon at bay and sending over two penalty kicks to give them a 6-0 lead with 30 minutes gone.

However, a try just before half-time saw the visitors sneak in front.

From open play, Swindon broke blind and got behind the defence.

Good interplay between forwards and backs saw the ball moved effortlessly down field before lock Pete Atkinson powered his way through the last defenders to get the touch down.

Neil Maycock converted to make score 7-6 at the interval.

Swindon started the second half strongly with two tries in 10 minutes, in the only period of play which saw them play to their potential.

After securing a number of phases of possession, the Harwell pack lost the ball in a tackle and Swindon were quick to use the turnover.

The ball was moved swiftly out wide and into the hands of flanker Paul Daniels.

He had wing Rob Haxton in support, but didn't have to use him as he dummied two defenders to cross unopposed.

Shortly afterwards, scrum half Connal Knott scored in similar fashion.

Turnover ball was again moved quickly through the backs hands to Knott out wide.

He had support but a full defence in front of him, so chipped over and outpaced the defence to score.

The game then became a stop-start affair with the referee allowing neither side the opportunity to use possession and the game ended with the award of a penalty try to the home side.
