CIRENCESTER went third in Gloucestershire Division One and managed their third successive defensive shutout with a 40-0 thumping of Ashley Down Old Boys at the Whiteway.

After a stuttering start to the campaign, Myles Ferris' men are on the up and they stayed in touch with leaders Old Colstonians and Widden Old Boys with this six-try romp.

On a day suited to the strenghs of the home side's running game, Old Boys were left to chase shadows at times, as fly-half Adam Seager orchastrated some dynamic moves in the backs.

Despite fielding a large set of forwards which dominated the early set-pieces, the visitors were too ponderous and were soon exposed by the pace of the home team.

Ciren registered four tries in the first half, thanks to a brace from speedster Ian Barber, and one apiece from fellow backs John Rawlinson and skipper Shane Marriott, all of which were converted by Seager, giving his side a 28-0 lead at the interval.

The second half developed into a scrappy affair as the Bristol side were allowed to spoil continually, which caused tempers to fray.

Despite this, the home side added two more tries with a second for Rawlinson and one for winger Rich Allen, the latter converted by Seager.

In a good all-round performance, highlights included some scintillating play by the backs as well as the forward effort of hooker Cameron Cooper and bullocking runs from No 8 Bernie Davies.
