Highworth Juniors lost 4-3 to Stratton Youth in an exciting encounter at the Rec.
Stratton had the first attack in the opening exchanges but shot wide. Ryan King and Ben Tollington combined well for Lorien Bardwell, but the Highworth striker shot straight at the keeper.
The home side had several chances before Stratton broke down the left wing, and Luke Adams was left to pick the ball out of the net after eight minutes.
Within two minutes Stratton had doubled the lead. This time the ball was played down the right wing, and despite Highworth having players back in numbers, the defence failed to clear the danger and a shot that looked as if it might have been going wide hit the advancing Adams and deflected off the underside of his body into the goal.
A three-minute delay to repair a rabbit hole that had not been spotted prior to kick off was enough to get Highworth to start playing football.
A quickly-taken free kick by Daniel Whitaker was met perfectly by King, who volleyed the ball into the Stratton goal on 18 minutes to halve the deficit.
Both sides played some exciting attacking football and a tremendous tackle in the Highworth penalty area by left back Martin Watson prevented a Stratton goal.
At the other end another good interchange between King and Tollington saw the ball deflected for a Highworth corner.
King took the corner which was perfectly met by captain Stephen Ware, who headed the ball home to bring the scores level on 25 minutes.
Another Stratton break on 30 minutes looked to have been cleared by Highworth after another great covering tackle, but the ball bobbled over the line to give the visitors the lead at half time.
The first 25 minutes of the second half it was all Highworth. Within seconds of the restart, King broke down the right wing and his long range effort rebounded off the post.
Alex Parker and Jamie Glock on for the injured Bardwell both had chances within minutes which were deflected for corners.
Good work by the attacking pair resulted in a low cross in from the left wing which was well met by Ben Cowley to bring the scores level only three minutes into the half.
Highworth continued to press forward and had more clear cut chances over the next 10 minutes without reply.
Stratton finally managed to get out of their own half midway though the half, but fired wide.
Another brilliant block by the Stratton keeper from a powerful Cowley shot again denied the home side.
Then on 69 minutes Stratton again broke down the left wing and won a corner. The ball was crossed in from the right and Highworth again failed to clear their lines.
A well-struck shot from just outside the penalty area beat the Highworth keeper, but was stopped on the line by King.
The ball struck him on the shoulder and left arm and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.
A well-taken penalty put Stratton ahead once again. Highworth continued to press forward for the equaliser and forced a series of corners, but Stratton defended resolutely and hung on for the victory.
