I would like to put it on record that Swindon is a beacon in showing how anti-social behaviour should be tackled.
I am also supportive of ASBOs being used in the right circumstances for the right people, as they can be a very effective means of encouraging good behaviour in the local community.
As I explained in Saturday's Advertiser, there is always a danger with ASBOs that they can become a route by which young people are brought into contact with other criminals, which can increase their offending behaviour.
The emphasis should therefore be on preventative measures and using ASBOs as a last resort.
It is because of this proactive and measured approach that, in my view, Swindon is successful in tackling anti-social behaviour and won praise from the Home Office.
