THE prospect of a new stadium for Swindon Town has thrown up many views on where it will be best situated and I do not intend to join that argument.

I will, however, throw in a few scenarios that appear to escape most correspondents i.e. did you know the County Ground was originally on the edge of town? If it was built on the edge of town again, in a few years time it will be surrounded by housing again.

The business of football is exactly that, a business that must run at a profit if it is to survive. With attendances at matches insufficient to cover the costs of a club it is essential other income is generated.

It is also obvious the County Ground in its present state will not be able to do so. Long ago I seem to remember an application to site a casino at the club.

But of course there would be an outcry at such a thought, even though it would appear it will be possible if present legislation is passed.

The cry is always that only 4,000 to 5,000 attend matches until some important games are on, when everyone becomes faithful supporters.

Imagine that instead of income from just football that income was being generated 365 days a year from other sources, the club thrives, it is self-sufficient and a massive boost for Swindon.

I would ask a loaded question: In ten to 15 years time will the Shaw tip be just that, a tip?
