Ref. 74410-07A GROUP of hardy swimmers braved freezing temperatures to swim three miles along the River Thames for charity.
Around 30 members of the Swindon branch of the British Sub Aqua Club took the plunge yesterday.
Wearing wet suits, they started their swim in Inglesham and ended it at the Lock Keeper's cottage just outside Lechlade.
The club's president, John Hamilton, was one of those taking part.
He said: "We've been doing it every year for 25 years and you do get used to the cold. I wear lots of thermal underwear under the suit which helps.
"Some people wear fancy dress costumes over their suits they are the brave ones.
"When you swim your blood circulation gets going. And when we get to the end we go to the Trout pub for a nice bowl of hot soup to warm up."
At 78, John is the oldest swimmer who took in the challenge.
He said: "I guess I'm lucky really to be so healthy at my age. I never take my health for granted."
