We were discussing the other evening about some of the good programmes that had not been repeated on television which should have been.

My wife said that she believed Howard's Way was one of those.

She informed me that it was, to the best of her knowledge, about a shipyard on the Solent near Southampton.

I could not recall this at all.

The only Howard's Way I can remember was when Michael Howard, who is the current leader of the Conservative party, was the Home Secretary in a previous Conservative government.

I can recall his promise of 5,000 extra police but he then went on to reduce their actual numbers by 1,132, during which time the crime rate doubled.

I can also recall when he and his party were in office interest rates hit 15 per cent for a whole year, 1.5 million suffered negative equity and more than 150,000 people lost their homes.

Pam, by all means have your Howard's Way repeated but be assured of one thing, I hope the other one never returns.
