much has been written about the New Labour's proposal to introduce Identity Cards, supported by the current Home Secretary and his immediate predecessor.
Perhaps it is relevant to recall the words of a former Labour Home Secretary, who in 1974 declared that in responding to terrorist attacks "we must guard against the danger of being driven to more extreme measures involving unwarranted infringement of personal liberty" and that "ID cards would be extremely expensive and largely ineffective".
I somehow think Roy Jenkins' observations will prove to be as apt for 2005 and they were 30 years ago.
