RW Selway is bang on with his comments in his recent letter.

The virtual disarmament by European nations which followed World War One led directly to World War Two.

That happened because no nation was left strong enough to stop newly rearmed Germany, Japan and Italy from trying to take over the world.

Even Britain, which had the world's largest navy, and France which had one of the world's biggest armies, combined together could not do it by the beginning of 1939.

The misguided disarmament plan cost hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of lives by the end of 1945.

Today all three main parties seem to want history to repeat itself by virtually disarming, yet at the same time spreading the few remaining forces thinly around the world's worst trouble spots.

Only UKIP among the political parties have plans to reverse this steady drain and, arguably, are the only party to seriously consider the military security of Britain.

Mr Selway talks of Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands yet today I seriously doubt we could successfully defend the Isle of Wight.

The argument that we rely on the USA is a false one.

Where were they in 1914, 1939 or 1982 when we needed them for example?
