WESTLECOT Indoor Bowls Club face crucial matches in the next few days in their quest for national honours.

Both the ladies and men's teams will be in action in national inter-club championship matches.

The ladies are through to the third round of the Yetton Trophy tomorrow and in the last 64, sub-zone final, will face Mid-Glos (12noon).

And in the Denny Cup the men meet old adversaries Desborough (Maidenhead), in the last 16.

Westlecot ladies have registered big wins in the previous rounds of their national competition.

They thrashed Leominster 104-65 and followed that up with an even bigger success when thumping local rivals Fairford 109-59.

The winners of this tie are paired in the next round (zone final) with either Avon Valley or Bromsgrove.

Team

Home Rink 1: Jean Bird, Joyce Laming, Brenda Cars, Doris Woodley; Rink 2: Ellen Bolland, Gaynor Tanner, Anne Hayward, Janet Willis.

Away Rink 1: Jill Webb, Jenny Vowles, Babs Salter, Wendy Anderson; Rink 2: Maureen Rogers, Audrey Whatley, Mary Moss, Josie Lloyd.

Two years ago the men reached the last eight in the Denny Cup only to lose out to Cambridge Park on a second extra end.

On Saturday (10am) they bid to overcome Desborough and progress to the quarter-finals again.

However, they face a stern test as Desborough knocked them out at this same stage three years ago.

Westlecot will be unchanged for the fourth time and rely on the same 16 players who have beaten Bromsgrove 81-72, Christie Miller 100-76 and Minehead 101-58 in rounds three, four and five. Prior to that with a different side they accounted for Whitchurch and Nailsea 116-62 and 113-52 respectively.

"It will be a tough cup tie," said Westlecot captain Neil Smith. "They beat us in the Denny Cup a few years ago and will be good opponents. But we are playing well as a team, and everyone is up for the match and waiting to get their teeth into the match."
