I SHOULD like to set the record straight regarding the fitting of CCTV to Thamesdown Transport buses (More buses to get spy cameras, EA January 3).
Whilst Swindon Council paid for the successful fitting of CCTV to the first five school buses in 2003, it is Wiltshire County Council which is contributing to the further five double-deck buses being equipped.
In addition, all 55 low-floor single deck buses in Thamesdown Transport's fleet now have CCTV.
This represents the vast majority of our buses operating the normal services in Swindon. Ten new buses to be delivered later this year will be similarly equipped.
This £190,000 investment, funded entirely by the company itself, has contributed greatly to increased safety for passengers and drivers, as well as significantly reducing insurance claims costs.
The savings, including those from reduced vandalism and anti-social behaviour, mean the cameras pay for themselves in around 18 months and thereafter contribute to keeping fares down and keeping up the level of service we can provide.
