STEVE WHITE COLUMN: AFTER watching Manchester United's game against Tottenham I think it is clear that television replays are needed in football.

As the stakes are so high at Premiership level, it is crucial to get decisions right.

Important matches can be decided by a wrong decision by a referee or linesman. I feel that for incidents in the final third of the pitch and especially in the penalty box the fourth official should be watching a TV monitor and consulted.

They should only do this if a decision can be called upon quickly. If you need to take a two minute break to review a situation you are getting into the realms of American football and that is no good.

With technology these days a fourth official can make a correct decision quickly enough.

It is no good blaming referees and linesman as the game is so quick nowadays that it is impossible for officials to get every decision right.

The Man Utd game was a perfect example, the ball must have been at least two feet over the line. I can't believe it was not given.

The same thing happened with us against Tiverton. I feel that Gary Thorne's header crossed the line but the referee didn't. That's football and you just have to get on with it.

I want to congratulate the team on a successful festive period. Two games in three days is a big task and I asked the lads for four points out of six and they delivered. I was expecting three against Tiverton and one against Chesham.

I'm glad it turned out the other way as we took points away from one of our rivals at the top of the league.

The performances are very encouraging, but it is a small shame that we did not score the penalty against Tiverton. I feel for Scott Walker, he has done well from the penalty spot for us this season and already has three.

He tells me it is the first one he has missed since he was 14. He is a fine striker of the ball and I will keep my confidence with him.

He assures me he wants to take the next one and I have confidence he will score it, I see no reason to change the penalty taker.

We are still trying to get a win at home. Our home record since I have joined the club is won nine, drawn nine and lost nine. In my eyes that is no catastrophe.

Certain fans on the Internet are searching for reasons. One fan this week blamed the pitch, I think the groundsman has done a great job this season and I'm getting tired of people looking for blame.

Recently we have been losing by the odd goal and I cannot knock the players. There have been one or two games where we have not been up to scratch but most of the home games the players have done well.

At Chesham I thought the lads were exceptional, it was a big game and the win keeps us in touching distance with the leaders. The effort was superb and we deserved to come out on top in a tight game.

We conceded ten corners but the defence was outstanding. We sat back and caught them on the counter.

It's a very tight league and I'm confused bysome of the results. Week in week out we have results that amaze us. Histon won at Chesham 7-2, beat us 5-0 and then Team Bath go there and win 2-0.

Merthyr Tyfil have been slipping up as well recently and only rescued a point with a last minute equaliser against Gloucester.

The inconsistencies at this level seem to be with every team. Results seemed to go our way this weekend but I feel six points is required in our next two games.

We have two important home games coming up against Hemel Hampstead and Dunstable and I will be looking for two victories. I think the players have something to prove if we want to be title contenders.

If we want to be up there we have to beat the teams lower down in the table. We will be prepared for the games so let's see what happens.
