JAMES Constable claimed Chippenham's winner just one minute after coming on as a second half substitute. The powerhouse striker had been left out of the starting line-up by manager Steve White after under-performing against Tiverton on Saturday.
But he made an immediate impact in Monday's top of the table clash to secure another three points on the road for the Bluebirds.
A delighted Constable said: "It's a nice feeling. I wanted to come on and make an impression to try and win my place back.
"When you don't start, you want to do your best when you come on and hopefully I can start the next game."
The man known inside Hardenhuish as Beano replaced Sam Allison on 75 minutes and had the ball in the net on 76. A perfectly weighted pass by the returning Ellis Wilmot put the youngster in behind Chesham's defence, and his pace allowed him to nudge the ball past keeper Jamie Jackson before casually rolling it into the empty goal.
Constable admits it was not the cleanest of finishes after forcing the ball home with his studs. "I didn't think I put enough on it," he added. "Luckily the defender gave up on it and it trickled in."
Chippenham had twice gone in front either side of half time. On loan front man David Gilroy rounded off a crisp move down the left on 37 minutes, the striker converting Scott Walker's driven cross after he had played a clever one-two with Lee Davidson.
And Allison showed his pace and power as he shrugged aside the Chesham defence when latching onto Walker's 50-yard left foot pass 12 minutes after the restart.
The Bluebirds number ten took the ball in his stride, cut inside his marker and arrowed it back into the bottom corner from just inside the box.
But what alarmed boss White was the way his side conceded both goals from corners.
Nathan Bowden-Haase rose highest inside the six yard box to head in four minutes after Gilroy's opener, and the dangerous John Lawford, who created the first, fired his left wing kick past Mark Hervin with his left foot to score direct on 67 minutes.
The wind, which caused havoc down on the undulating surface all afternoon, caught his drilled centre and caught out the Bluebirds keeper.
White was concerned with the number of corners his side conceded, and claimed it was inevitable the hosts would take advantage eventually.
He added: "We gave away nine or ten corners in the first half. We defended them well but we gave too many away.
"It was more the giving them away than defending them, if you give away that many corners against a team with that height you are going to concede.
"We tell our wing backs to show them inside and away from the corner line, but because Chesham know they are good at set pieces they worked the ball near the goal line to win corners."
White's game plan against a side who thumped Dunstable Town 8-1 two days earlier was to use the speed of his front runners.
The midfield unit looked for the long ball at every occasion to release the threat, and all three of the strikers could have increased the winning margin had they capitalised on their chances.
"We knew we would have to weather the storm early on, but that we had pace on the break to hurt them with Allison and Gilroy, and Constable when he came on," the former Swindon Town striker explained.
"We played some good football through the second period of the first half and in the second half we played very sensibly.
"I also think that bit of luck was with us today."
