THE Athelstan Players dramatic society has presented a petition with 1,400 signatures from townspeople, appealing for North Wiltshire District Council to save Malmesbury Town Hall.
Society secretary Megan Mills and chairman Christine Mace presented the petition at the district council's headquarters in Chippenham on Friday.
The district council wants to sell the town hall after refusing to shell out £770,000 to town councillors who want to renovate the building, so it complies with disability access legislation.
But Mrs Mace said the uncertainty of the building's future could force the drama club, established in Malmesbury in 1945, to close.
Mrs Mace said: "We have been told that bookings at the town hall will end on May 31, but it keeps changing. This would mean there would be neither a carnival revue nor pantomime next year."
Mayor Patrick Goldstone said the actual date closing date for user bookings in the hall was September 30.
He said he was optimistic a solution could be reached with the district council to save the building.
