WEST Swindon residents are being invited to give their opinions on how successful moves to tackle anti-social behaviour in the area have been.

The West Swindon Area Forum takes place on Monday and local councillors will be there to hear what people have to say about anti-social behaviour in their area.

Over the past eight months dispersal orders have been used to stop people from gathering at the West Swindon Centre, Shaw Ridge Leisure Park, Freshbrook, Toothill Village Centre, Pinehurst, Moredon and Greenmeadow.

The police have the power to impose dispersal orders on a particular area to limit the number of people that congregate there. Under 16-year-olds can be escorted home and if they misbehave again they can be arrested and fined or jailed.

Inspector Willie Glasgow, of Swindon police, and Cheri Wright, Swindon Council's anti social behaviour co-ordinator will both be at the meeting to explain the legislation.

They say the orders have helped the police to respond better to community problems.

It is hoped also that five more police community support officers will be appointed by the west and north Swindon police sectors this year.

The next area forum meeting takes place on Monday at 7.30pm in the Link Centre.
