Prince Charles has offered to supply plants from his Highgrove estate for a proposed Elizabethan garden in Cornwall.

The Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Partnership plans to apply early this year for National Lottery funding for the £50,000 project which is due to be launched at Mary Newman's Cottage in Saltash.

The planned garden at the 15th-century cottage, reputed to have been the family home of Sir Francis Drake's first wife, Mary Newman, would feature original Elizabethan medicinal and culinary herbs.

Sir Francis Drake married Mary Newman in 1569.

They had no children and she died in 1581.

Sir Francis is most famously associated with the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588.
