WE enter 2005 completely overshadowed by the enormity of horror caused by the earthquake in South East Asia.
The TV images are almost painful to watch. With the media understandably preoccupied with this, Iraq's prolonged and bloody process of change has had a publicity break.
The Government can reflect on the fact that their policy has meant that many more innocent people have died at the hands of Western troops than were ever killed under Saddam.
Yes, it is true the world is a better place without Saddam but there are plenty of countries who have autocratic regimes. The West is good friends with Saudi Arabia for instance.
As for the elections in Iraq with over 100 parties standing, some voters might even yearn for the simplicity of only having one party to vote for.
