So the latest idea from Kennet District Council to save money is to get Devizes Council to pay for the lavatory facility on The Green, upgraded at a cost of £90,000 five years ago.
The district council proposes to build a new lavatory to receive the needs of Devizes people in a central location. I hope that people in need are similarly located! Mark Smith, Kennet's environment and amenities manager says that such a public utility has to be used by 1,000 people per day to be viable. This does not seem to make any sense as there is no revenue and if no-one used them then there would be less cost there being no cleaning and none of the obvious consumables used. There would be a cost for heating, lighting and building maintenance.
It would be better if the district council looked in-house for cost savings. There seems to be a cast of thousands emerging in cars from Browfort at knock-off time, some destined for as far away as Bournemouth I am told!
