THE Open Spaces Society has called on Swindon MPs Julia Drown and Michael Wills to oppose plans for 'gating orders' for public highways.
The Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Bill, which has its second reading in the Houses of Parliament on Monday aims to give local authorities the power to prevent the public using certain public highways.
The Government says that the plans will reduce crime and anti-social behaviour.
But Kate Ashbrook, general secretary of the Open Spaces Society said: "There is no evidence that such provisions are needed.
"Indeed, the presence of the public on a public highway is a protection against crime and anti-social activities."
Ms Drown, who represents South Swindon, said: "Although we don't want to close every road to traffic I think there may be some parts of Swindon where it could be a safe and secure measure to take."
