7447-12Colin Roberts hasn't got time for quitters, as our 12 Get Fit For '05 candidates have just discovered.
Colin, the Living Well Health Club manager at the Hilton Hotel, in West Swindon, will be helping our volunteers on their quest to shape up.
And he's determined to get results.
He said: "It's not going to be easy. I want 100 per cent commitment.
"Fortunately, all 12 are full of enthusiasm. I hope it lasts because it's going to be hard work but great fun too."
As part of the campaign, our volunteers have been given a year's free membership at Living Well.
Last night Melanie Barney, 28, from West Swindon, went for her first workout.
She said: "It felt fantastic. I was a bit tired but that's what it's all about.
"If I wasn't in the gym, I would only be sitting at home watching EastEnders."
She aims to work out three times a week, as does John Driver, 58, from Wroughton.
He said: "I used to go to the gym but just got out of the habit. I'm really looking forward to it."
All candidates will be following a special exercise programme, which involves using the rowing machine and stretching with dumb-bells.
Jeff Gibbs, 40, from Coving-ham, also went to the gym yesterday.
He said: "I have let myself go big time, so I was a bit worried how it would go. But I ended up enjoying myself and can't wait until my next session."
Exercise for everyone
You can get fit without going to the gym.
Colin Roberts, who is the manager of the Living Well Health Club, wants to help all of you reach your own fitness goals.
"There are many exercies that people can do in their own home," he said.
"It is important that you warm up gently before you start any exercises and do not strain at all."
Here are Colin's first exercise tips:
Start off gently, gradually increasing your effort each time you exercise.
Remember these four points for an effective workout:
1. Always try to keep a good posture and straighten your back.
2. Maintain a good technique let your limbs move naturally and in their full range.
3. Aim to repeat each exercise 20 times.
4. Carry extra weight try holding a can of beans or a bottle filled with water which will be like a dumb-bell.
