RESIDENTS are objecting to plans to build 24 homes on the former Co-op site in Highworth. They say the development will overlook their homes and be out of character with the area around the Cherry Orchard site.
Highworth Town Council has also objected to the plans, which will be considered by Swindon Council's planning committee on Tuesday.
Linden Homes Western wants to build six houses and 18 apartments on the site of the old Co-op store, which has already been demolished.
As well as the issue of overlooking the residents who objected to the plans are concerned about an increase in noise, traffic and pollution, a worsening of the parking problem in Highworth and the future of a mature beech tree on the site.
The town council says the development would be obtrusive and infringe on neighbours' privacy. The buildings are too high and the design is out of keeping with the area, the town council argues.
The council's report on the plans says there is no proposed development within 15 metres of the tree and recommends the development be approved, arguing that changes have been made to address the residents' concerns.
The houses, in two blocks of three, would appear be two storeys to the front and three storeys to the rear.
while the 18 two-bedroom apartments would be two-and-a-half stories. Twenty five car parking spaces will also be provided for the apartments.
