74475-06SOUTH Swindon MP Julia Drown has helped to promote a supermarket's environmentally-friendly scheme.

The Labour MP visited Tesco, in Ocotal Way, yesterday to support the store's Christmas card recycling campaign.

After the festive decorations are packed back into the loft many of us wonder what to do with the cards we have accumulated.

But Ms Drown and Swindon Council are urging people not to throw them out with household rubbish.

"As a keen recycler I always try to recycle my Christmas cards and I'm glad that here in Swindon we have ways of making this easy, thanks to places like Tesco having collection points," she said.

Store manager Adrian Hunt said the scheme was always popular with customers.

"We have a box at the front of the shop and we have to empty it about three times a day it's absolutely incredible.

"It's great for the environment, our customers love it and we're glad Julia Drown is behind us."

Swindon Council has teamed up with Recycle Now a green initiative and the Woodland Trust to offer a more environmentally sound alternative.

John Short, the director of Swindon Services, said: "We are asking people to post their cards in the special bins at the recycling centre at Waterside Park in Cheney Manor or at the specially designed bins at WH Smith and Tesco."
