TABE-TOPPERS Swindon edged a tough Berks Bucks & Oxon Premier match away at Milton Keynes at the weekend, but the 34-20 scoreline flattered the visitors.

Swindon won the toss and opted to play into a strong wind, and the decision soon paid off.

A good series of possession was halted illegally close to the Milton Keynes line. Flanker Paul Daniels took a quick tap and powered through the defence before off loading to his back row partner Jon Parker for the score.

The home side responded to level the scores.

Swindon again edged in front with a try from winger Robin Haxton. Good forward play saw the ball moved up field deep into opposition territory.

From the ruck, hooker Scott Chapman broke blind drew in the defence and popped to Haxton to dive over in the corner. Neil Maycock converted.

Milton Keynes again responded with a try from broken play with the winger touching down in the corner to draw within two points, before Swindon skipper Paul Wakefield scored to keep his side ahead 17-10 at half time.

With the wind at their backs the visitors hoped to dominate the second half, but it was the home side who scored first.

Swindon fly half Neil Maycock then crossed for a score after dummying his opposite man and beating the last defender, but within five minutes the home side crossed the line to keep within range of victory at 22-20.

With seven minutes remaining however, Swindon finally managed to put themselves clear.

Hooker Scott Chapman scored from close range, and in the dying seconds substitute back row Ian Butcher made a break down field and popped the ball to Wakefield in support, who shrugged off the Milton Keynes winger to score under the posts. Maycock converted.
