FARMERS' markets are one of the great success stories of the past few years. Such is their popularity the Swindon Borough Council has given the green light for more.

The town centre will be the venue for a weekly farmers' market selling fresh produce from local producers.

Shoppers can stock up on a wide range of goods including honey, free range eggs, organic vegetables, jams and chutney fresh meats, cheeses and pies.

Wiltshire Farmers' Market Rules stipulate that the produce sold there must be produced locally and cannot be produced in factory farms.

Stalls will be set up at different locations across town.

The first sale is due to take place between 9am and 1.30pm on Friday, January 14 in Canal Walk.

From then, the farmers' markets will be held every Friday.

Organiser Lynn Forrester, of Swindon Borough Council, said: "For the town, the market will mean more visitors. For customers the new weekly markets will give them direct access to fresh farm produce.

"And for the local producers, it provides an opportunity to build a more sustainable business. We hope this will lead to healthier, thriving rural communities."
