AMESBURY councillors have put forward a number of ideas that could reduce traffic flow within the town centre.

At a recent meeting they suggested pedestrianising Salisbury Street and returning the High Street to two-way traffic.

Other areas earmarked for improvement included Church Street and Flower Lane.

But the Joint Transportation Unit, which comprises county and district council officers, has highlighted a number of problems with the scheme.

In a report to councillors, Paula Arnold said the A345 junction with the High Street was not wide enough for large vehicles turning into the High Street.

She also said turning areas would be needed in Church Street and Flower Lane.

Councillors decided to pass the matter to the Amesbury Market Town Partnership (AMTP), which is tasked with preparing a community plan for the area.

The AMTP has also been asked to steer a local heritage initiative project, which would see information about Amesbury and its heritage put on permanent public display.

Funding is available but the AMTP need more volunteers to help with this particular scheme.

Anyone who is interested should contact AMTP chairman Ian Mitchell, on 07718 596828.

Their next meeting is due to take place on Tuesday, February 15 in Amesbury Infants School.
