GAZETTE & HERALD: CORSHAM county councillor Peter Davis has launched an inquiry because he believes companies approved by the council are charging too much.

Coun Davis said he was given very high quotes to put in railings at the town's library, and said he thought companies seemingly had a licence to print money.

He said he wanted railings added to a five-metre stretch of wall by the library which has been damaged by skateboarders.

When he approached Corsham firm, Coppershell Services, they quoted him £720 for the work. However, Wiltshire County Council's contractor had quoted £6,500 for railings around the entire 32-metre length.

Coun Davis said the money could be better spent elsewhere. "There is thousands of pounds being wasted. If there is a 40 per cent difference on a price for one little job, what is it like on a large contract or undertakings?

"I think too much reliance is given to designated companies which are being sanctioned for council work.

"A lot of ratepayers' money could be saved if more consideration was given to the cost of private suppliers in line with designated ones.

"Too much reliance is given on them providing a competitive and satisfactory price for this job. The council should be looking more closely."

Coppershell Services' £720 quote compares with an estimate from council consultant, Mouchel Parkman of £1,140.

Mouchel Parkman, however, pointed out that part of the wall would also need repairing and planning permission may need to be obtained.

A report from the Director of Environmental Services, George Batten, says the gap between the companies is comparable.

Mr Batten also said there had been a misunderstanding over the matter with the original £6,500 quote which would provide galvanised steel balustrades to all walls of the library."
