YOUR report on councillors' comments in last week's Gazette and Herald prompts me to comment further.
When a councillor becomes elected for a fixed period of time they must know what is expected of them and what allowances they are to receive, to what is a voluntary commitment. If the demands on their time and expenses do not cover expenditure then it is time to step aside and let another volunteer stand up for election. Maybe they can do the job in a more proficient way.
Kennet District Council is running a year by year deficit using reserves to remain viable, and no way can afford to pay out another £60,000, not even if they hope to recuperate this from council tax payers. The council will be capped if they go over double the rate of inflation.
Excessive increase costs cannot be tolerated. Top rate skills are needed to be cost effective.
