LAST season's Dorset & WIlts 1st XV Vase runners-up Swindon moved smoothly into a quarter-final showdown against Bradford on Avon after a 64-14 demolition of second-round hosts Westbury.

There were two tries each for skipper Paul Wakefield, wing Mathieu Seynaeve and flanker Jon Parker in a comprehensive triumph.

Playing into a strong wind, the visitors started brightly, but fell behind to an early converted try.

The response was swift as Seynaeve capitalised on a mistake in the Westbury defence to run in from 40 metres.

Fly-half Neil Maycock gave his side the lead, ghosting through the defence after a planned move and he also added the conversion.

The next 20 minutes saw Swindon dominate.

Skipper Wakefield crossed from close range after the ball was moved from one side of the pitch to create the space, Maycock again converting.

Good interplay between forwards and backs then created another space for full-back Tom Lalor to cross the line.

Prop Pat McBain got on the scoresheet after a break from a scrum in the opposition 22.

Quick handling saw flanker Paul Daniels feed his back row partner Parker who, rather than beating the last defender, off-loaded to McBain on the line to send him under the posts.

Maycock converted to give his side a 31-7 lead at half time.

Swindon weathered an early second-half storm but, when the ball was cleared downfield, the defence could not react and a penalty try was awarded when Westbury illegally prevented a clear scoring opportunity.

Maycock again added the extras as he did when Parker scored a brace of tries to cap off a man-of-the-match performance.

In between, Westbury managed a consolation, but Wakefield and Seynaeve.

MINETY were dumped out of the Stroud & District Combination Cup as Painswick launched a second-half comeback to steal a 22-19 victory.

Having established a 12-point lead, Minety were let down by their fitness and discipline at the death.

Painswick opened with a converted try, but hooker Andy Moran claimed a touchdown from a well-executed catch-and-drive lineout.

Flanker Mark Holdsworth then took advantage of a Painswick error off the back of a scrum and centre Peter Roberts converted.

It got better still as Roberts gathered a chip ahead and scored, but after the break Painswick ran in three tries to break Minety hearts.
