THE HILLFORTS of the Marlborough Downs are the subject of a lecture this month.
The lecture, by Mark Bowden, is at the University of Bath in Swindon Oakfield Campus on Wednesday at 5.30pm.
The Iron Age hillforts are among the many historic remains on the Marlborough Downs.
Most are considered to be generally well preserved but only one, Liddington, has been excavated to modern standards and then only on a small scale.
However recent surveys have begun to shed light on these enigmatic monuments.
Mr Bowden's lecture will draw together information about these hillforts derived from antiquarian sources and from the recent surveys at Liddington, Barbury and especially Oldbury Castle near Calne.
The lecture is 5.30-6.30pm in the Main Hall of Oakfield Campus. Free admission and parking.
